Feeling: Well-Rested
Today is January 31st, 2023 (Tuesday), and I woke up at 11 pm. I feel like a lazy piece of trash and it pains me to know I slept that long. My day is now shorter; others have been awake and productive for at least 3 hours before I woke up. Last night after work, I went to the gym. I got off around 10:30 and was at the gym until 11:18. I then got home, took a shower, and played Minecraft with work friends until 4 am. It was an excellent conversation but I regret staying up that late, especially since I need rest to heal my muscles from lifting.
Speaking of fitness, I think I made a breakthrough. Normally when I go, I try to get in and out as fast as possible. I recently ran into a roadblock with my lifting though. I would max 2 times and move on to the next machine with the hopes of getting in and out in 20 minutes. However, recently I have not been feeling any soreness the next day which is unbelievably disheartening. I mentioned this to one of my coworkers who just so happens to be an aspiring powerlifter and she said I should do 4 sets instead of 2 and use a weight that you can only do 10 reps of. I tried the advice last night to do squats and my back and let me tell you… I feel floppy. Great advice, I 100% recommend it.
Fortunately for me, Tuesdays are my off days. I don’t have work or classes and I can utilize it to get a bunch of work done. It’s a shame I woke up at 11 am instead of my usual 7 or 9. But better late than never and what’s done is done. After this blog, I’m going to work on my schoolwork and read my corporate finance textbook to catch up on my studies but also research ramen since Phoebe and I are making ramen tonight (hype). I always enjoy doing thorough research on the food before making it. At the end of the day, it’s science, and if you understand how a meal works, that drastically increases the odds that whatever you make will be amazing. All I know about ramen from past experiences is that using soft-boiled eggs and green onion adds texture, then you add some sort of oil, usually sesame oil, which floats on top and covers the noodles as they exit the broth under the oil. I might be weird for geeking over food but it’s truly fascinating to me to know why something works that was probably discovered by complete accident or because someone decided to combine anything they could find in the house into a soup.
I forgot to mention this is week 2 of cold showers. I don't like counting the days of how long I’ve been doing something good because it’s a constant reminder to me of the thing I’m “giving up” in a sense and will always be in my subconscious. You shouldn’t care about how many days you’ve been doing something consistent or you’re sure to falter. This applies to everything habit-wise. If you give up smoking and you mark on your calendar every day you wake up you’re clean, it’s a constant reminder of oh yeah…. smoking. This is why I think people who are addicted to heroin and alcohol alike and get clean, usually fall back into the cycle on their 1st anniversary of getting clean… Or even worse, their 5-year. I’m a huge advocate for a set-it-and-forget-it mindset because your old habits are no longer on your mind and you’re simply inhabiting a better lifestyle without looking back on your past indulges. At this point, I’m not looking at hot showers with fond thoughts. I genuinely like my cold showers now and I can’t wait to start seeing the other benefits it provides. The dopamine benefits are nice but it’s very good for your skin and stimulates the adaptations humans have developed via evolution. After all, we were designed while taking baths in rivers and waterfalls, which were… cold.
